More Than A Mother's Day Gift Guide

Let's be real, shopping for Mother's Day can be a bit of a faff and, more often than any of us would like to admit, she ends up with some shop-bought flowers and a half-eaten box of chocolates. Now, don't get me wrong, lucky her for getting at least half a box of chocolates, but even I'm bored with that! This year, why not let us take out the fuss and do the work for you?

I've put together the perfect selection of products that go above and beyond to spoil your mum this Mother's Day. Keep reading to find some extra-special items guaranteed to give her something she'll never forget (and to secure you that coveted 'Favourite Child' award!).

Something for the Kitchen

Argon Tableware's Cast Iron Dutch Oven Casserole Dish serves style and practicality by the litre (all 3.5 of them!). Ideal for her stews, hotpots, soups, braised meats and, of course, the unmissable Sunday Roast.

Now, think ahead with me, you need a present, something special but not breaking the bank - what about cooking her a lovely meal using her new dish? Now, obviously, we can't cook it for you but, in the spirit of 'taking the fuss out', I've got an easy recipe for some perfect home comfort food...

Macaroni Cheese with Chicken

  • 3 tbsp. unsalted butter
  • Fine sea salt
  • Freshly ground pepper
  • 1/2 lb. penne pasta
  • 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 1/2 c. coarsely grated smoked mozzarella
  • 1 1/2 c. shredded roast chicken
  • 1 c. finely grated Parmigiano-Reggiano
  • 1 tbsp. finely chopped fresh rosemary
  • 3 tbsp. all-purpose flour
  • 2 1/2 c. whole milk
  • 2 clove garlic

  1. Preheat oven to 450 degrees F. Butter a 1 1/2-quart gratin or baking dish.
  2. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta until al dente, about 11 minutes. Drain, run under cold water, and drain again. Transfer to a large bowl.
  3. In a medium skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add onion and a pinch of salt, reduce heat to medium-low, and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly golden, about 10 minutes.
  4. Add onion to pasta and stir to combine. Add mozzarella, chicken, 2/3 cup Parmesan, and rosemary; stir to combine.
  5. In a medium heavy saucepan over medium-low heat, melt butter. Add flour and cook over low heat, whisking, for 3 minutes. Add hot milk, whisking vigorously, then add garlic and 1 1/2 teaspoons salt.
  6. Bring mixture to a simmer, whisking; then reduce heat and gently simmer, whisking occasionally, until béchamel is thickened (the sauce should thickly coat the back of a spoon), about 10 minutes.
  7. Discard garlic before adding béchamel to pasta, season with pepper, and stir.
  8. Transfer into a baking dish and smooth top. Sprinkle with remaining 1/3 cup Parmesan and more pepper. Bake until bubbling and golden, 12 to 15 minutes. Let sit for 15 minutes before serving.

Something for the Living Room

The Argon Tableware Rustic Serving Tray with Rope Handles offers multiple uses so your mum can utilize it for whatever she fancies - a serving tray, a cheese board, or a perfectly portable platter for decadent desserts. She could even make it into a centrepiece with candles, coasters and cactuses to create her own little relaxation station - which is something I'm sure any mum will appreciate!

A perfect decorative piece in any room of the house, the natural slate will provide years of use and enjoyment and - more importantly - score you plenty of brownie points!

Something for the Bedroom

For mothers, there's really nothing like looking back at memories and feeling so full of happiness and love. An ideal gift for those shopping on a budget, our Nicola Spring collection of photo frames features hundreds of options in every colour, shape and size you can imagine!

My pick of the bunch has to be the Neutral Grey Nicola Spring 3D Shadow Box Photo Frame. A beautifully crafted acrylic frame, a secret spacer lets your mum display her favourite photos in a choice of 3 depths. They can even be filled with small pebbles or tiles - perfect for art-and-crafty types!

Why not print off a picture that she'll never forget. Something that warms her heart and makes her proud. Or perhaps a print of her favourite saying or motto to live by.

These frames are also very durable, making it the perfect gift for the madhouses filled with teens, toddlers and furry feline art critics.

Other favourites on my list include:

Each of these products can be found (at time of writing) for under £10, which not only means brownie points from your mum but from your bank balance as well!
